Confronting China
Confronting China offers a comprehensive analysis of US policy towards China, drawing on the expertise of senior policymakers and national security practitioners to address the critical challenge of deterring Chinese aggression and preserving peace. The book examines China's pursuit of global hegemony from multiple perspectives, exploring various dimensions of China's growing power and its implications for the international order. Through a series of expert contributions, the book provides concrete, strategy-based policy recommendations for countering China's ambitions, culminating in a synthesis of key insights placed within a broader strategic context.
In the Warlords’ Shadow
In the Warlord’s Shadow provides a first-hand account of the Village Stability Operations/Afghan Local Police initiative, an innovative program launched by U.S. special operations forces in Afghanistan in 2010 to combat the Taliban insurgency. The book details how U.S. Army Special Forces and Navy SEAL teams embedded with local villagers, organizing and enlisting Afghans in their own defense while addressing community grievances, to effectively counter both the Taliban's military and political influence. Green demonstrates how this approach fundamentally altered the course of the war in Afghanistan.
The Valley’s Edge
This book offers a firsthand account of U.S. efforts to combat the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan's Uruzgan province. Daniel Green, who served there as a U.S. Department of State political adviser from 2005 to 2006, provides insights into the challenges faced by the Provincial Reconstruction Team, including unrealistic expectations, limited understanding of local culture and resource constraints, while detailing their efforts in governance, reconstruction, and managing relationships with local power structures. The narrative spans multiple years, contrasting Green's initial experiences with his observations upon returning to Afghanistan in 2009-2010, highlighting both progress and persistent issues across different U.S. administrations.
Front Toward Enemy
In Front Toward Enemy, Daniel R. Green explores the veteran experience through the lens of post-war transition. Drawing from his own experiences and conversations with fellow veterans, Green explores the complex emotions and struggles of returning soldiers, including feelings of estrangement and the paradoxical desire to both return to war and avoid it entirely. By examining the veteran experience through sociological, philosophical, cultural, and political lenses, the book aims to broaden public understanding of how wars affect those who fight them and bridge the gap between veterans and civilians.
Fallujah Redux
Fallujah Redux provides a comprehensive account of the 2007 Fallujah Awakening, written by Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans who served there, detailing how the city turned away from the al-Qaeda insurgency. The book chronicles the transformation of Fallujah from a stronghold of insurgent activity to a model of successful counterinsurgency, achieved through a coordinated effort between U.S. forces, Iraqi security forces, and local tribes. It offers unique insights into the often-overlooked pacification campaign that fundamentally altered security conditions in Fallujah, filling in the gaps of a story that extends beyond the major battles typically covered in other accounts of the Iraq War.
